Enteral administration is food or drug administration via the human gastrointestinal tract. Parenteral nutrition refers to the delivery of calories and nutrients into a vein.

Fundamental goals of nutritional support are-

  1. Meet the energy requirements for metabolic purposes
  2. Tissue repair
  3. Maintenance of core temperature
  4. Minimize the protein breakdown and preserve the lean body mass.

Indications of enteral nutrition

  1. Distal, low output, entrocutaneous fistula
  2. Dysphagia except to liquids
  3. Patients after major trauma or surgery
  4. Protein energy malnutrition with poor oral intake
